Mariette Elena Ogo Barcinas is the recipient of the $5,000 2021 SPIO Academic Scholarship.
Major: Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Social Science
University: Junior at Boise State University
Bio: Mariette Elena Ogo Barcinas is a first-generation college student from the world's friendliest island paradise Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. She is currently in her third year at Boise State University and is a member of the second cohort of the formerly known CNMI Million Dollar Scholars. Since Mariette began her educational journey, she had been actively involved in various on-campus organizations that serve to benefit students and the community at large. She believes that her paramount cultural values of respect and humility could get one to destinations anyone could dream of, as long as their goals are aligned with action and intention.

Why is it important to have Pacific representation in higher education?
I believe that Pacific Islanders are the most unique and culturally rich people and when granted the platform, have the ability to transform the world. Many of the world’s transformations are inspired by interactions within higher education institutions.
Because our native homes are located in the Pacific, we are drastically impacted by global policies and changes, particularly in the United States. Universal practices that influence climate change are an example. With Pacific Islander presence in higher education, we are seated at the appropriate tables to gain knowledge and access to platforms to fight for not just ourselves, but our people and our homeland as well.
How is this scholarship impacting your education?
It is an honor to be selected as a recipient of this award especially because this organization serves a noble mission. I consider myself very fortunate and cannot help but feel genuinely blessed that this scholarship arrived at a time of personal adversity. I feel privileged to be able to concentrate more on my academic studies and on-campus student commitments now that I do not have to worry about how I will fund this year’s tuition.

What are your career and education goals?
In a world full of adventure and possibilities, my ultimate goal is to serve as a professional who leads to improve the lives of the people of the Marianas and other Pacific Islands. Considering the degree that I am currently pursuing, I hope to serve as a pioneer in the advancement of studies regarding Pacific Island cultures and mental health.
The understanding of the relationship between our local cultures and science is crucial in creating a mentally healthier dynamic shift. Coming from a small island, it is reasonable to assume fewer opportunities than in larger places. Part of this drawback includes consistent financial insecurity, especially while pursuing higher education. Personal experiences have inspired my dream of founding a scholarship foundation with a mission of promoting higher education among the people of Rota. In time, it may garner the necessary backing to provide financial opportunities for students of the Marianas and ultimately, the Pacific Island region.
Any tips to students applying for scholarships?
Be open to sharing your story. Every person has an experience that has shaped who they are today – yours is the one you know best. When drafting the recipe that is your essay(s), include the ingredients of truth, emotion, and intention. Despite the obvious need for funds, believe that sharing your story will have the greatest influence.
